What is a portfolio X-Ray and how do you read it?

A portfolio X-Ray (officially Morningstar Instant X-Ray™) is a report that analyses an investment portfolio in depth from the funds, ETFs or stocks it contains. Instead of looking at each holding on its own, the X-Ray "opens" every fund and aggregates the underlying positions to show how your portfolio is really built: which countries, sectors, asset types and risk levels you actually have, beyond the fund names.

On Portfolio X-Ray you can build your portfolio by entering holdings and weights, and generate this report for free, without creating an account.

Who generates the X-Ray report?

Portfolio X-Ray does not generate the X-Ray PDF: our tool helps you build the portfolio and the link, and the report is generated through renta4banco using Morningstar Instant X-Ray™ technology. Morningstar Instant X-Ray is a trademark of Morningstar, Inc.; xrayportfolio.com is not affiliated with or endorsed by Morningstar.

How to read it

What information does an X-Ray report include?

Morningstar Instant X-Ray™ opens each fund and aggregates its underlying holdings to reveal the full picture of your investment.

Am I really diversified?

Which countries and sectors weigh the most?

Where is my concentration?

How much risk am I taking?

Asset allocation

See how much you really hold in equities, bonds, cash and other categories.

Geographic exposure

Identify countries, regions and emerging markets present in your portfolio.

Risk and returns

Review volatility, Sharpe, alpha, beta and correlations when they are available.

Largest holdings

Spot real concentration in underlying stocks and bonds.

Asset allocation

The first block of the report shows what percentage of your portfolio sits in each broad category: equities, bonds, cash, and other assets (such as real estate) that Morningstar classifies separately. It also shows the portion that could not be classified.

Geographic exposure

The X-Ray breaks your portfolio down by country and by major world region (Americas, Europe, Asia), and within each region by market development. This lets you see, for example, whether your portfolio is heavily concentrated in the United States or has real emerging-market exposure, even if your fund names do not say so explicitly.

Sectors

It shows your portfolio weight in each economic sector, grouped into three blocks: cyclical (basic materials, cyclical consumer, financial services, real estate), sensitive (communication, energy, industrials, technology) and defensive (defensive consumer, healthcare, utilities).

Investment style

"Style" crosses two variables: whether the companies in the portfolio are value, blend or growth, and whether they are small, mid or large cap. Alongside this you will see ratios such as price/book, price/earnings and price/cash flow, which indicate whether the portfolio is invested in relatively "expensive" or "cheap" companies.

The 10 largest holdings

A list of the individual assets (underlying stocks or bonds) with the largest real weight in your portfolio, showing type, sector and country — very useful for spotting concentration in a single company even if you hold several different funds.

Returns and risk (if the report includes them)

When the X-Ray includes performance analysis, it compares your portfolio with a benchmark and shows:

  • Cumulative returns over 3 months, 6 months, 1, 3 and 5 years versus the benchmark.
  • Volatility: how much the portfolio value moves relative to its average.
  • Sharpe ratio: return earned per unit of risk taken — the higher it is, the better the risk-adjusted return.
  • Alpha: the difference between what the portfolio actually returned and what was expected given its risk.
  • Beta: how sensitive the portfolio is to market moves (Beta greater than 1 = more volatile than the market; Beta less than 1 = less volatile).
  • Correlation matrix: how the funds in your portfolio move relative to each other. A correlation close to -1 indicates maximum diversification; close to 1, that the funds tend to rise and fall together.

Which assets an X-Ray can analyse (and which it cannot)

Morningstar Instant X-Ray is designed mainly for UCITS funds, ETFs, ETCs and stocks. It is not set up to analyse correctly:

  • Pension plans (PP)
  • EPSV / PPSI
  • Hedge funds (FIL)

If you add any of these products in the builder, we will warn you that they are not recommended and the report will omit them.

Frequently asked questions

Is generating a portfolio X-Ray free?+
Yes. Generating the report is free and does not require creating an account. You only need an account if you want to save your portfolio, mark it as a favourite or comment.
Does Portfolio X-Ray generate the PDF?+
No. Portfolio X-Ray helps you build the portfolio and the link; the final PDF is generated by renta4banco using Morningstar Instant X-Ray technology.
How many assets can I analyse?+
You can add as many assets as you want, entering the weight of each one until you reach 100% (or, in amount mode, entering the amount invested in each one).
What if an asset does not show correctly in the report?+
Sometimes a fund is not mapped correctly when the PDF is generated. If you see a blank gap or a missing holding, write to us through the contact form with the asset ISIN so we can correct it manually.
