How the portfolio X-Ray generator works

Portfolio X-Ray lets you build your investment portfolio and generate its Morningstar Instant X-Ray™ report in a few steps, without creating an account. Here is each step in detail.

Start now

1. Add your assets

01

In the builder, enter your assets one by one.

The most reliable way to identify them is with:

  • ISIN (a 12-character code, for example IE00B4L5Y983 or LU1206943596)
  • Morningstar ID (for example 0P00015LRD or F00000THA5)

With an ISIN or Morningstar ID, the match is usually immediate.

Search by ticker or name

You can also search by ticker (for example NKE, ADBE) or by name (for example "Vanguard FTSE 100"). In those cases:

  • There are often several possible matches.
  • You will have to confirm which instrument is the right one.
  • Resolution is slower and less precise than with an ISIN or Morningstar ID.

Recommendation: use the ticker or name only if you do not have the ISIN to hand. Next time, copy it directly from the fund factsheet — it will save you steps.

If an asset does not resolve

If the system cannot find the product:

  1. Open the fund page on Morningstar.
  2. Copy the Morningstar ID from the URL (or paste the quote URL directly).
  3. Enter it manually in the builder.

You cannot add the same asset twice (same ISIN, ticker or Morningstar ID).

2. Set the weights: percentage or amount

02

Percentage mode

You enter the weight of each position. The total must reach 100% to generate the X-Ray. The tool always shows the accumulated total and what is still missing.

Amount mode

You enter the amount of money invested in each position, and the builder calculates the percentages automatically. In this mode the numbers do not need to add up to a specific total: positive amounts are enough.

Amount privacy

If you use cash amounts, they are stored for you and you see them when you reopen your portfolio. Nobody else sees them: when you share your portfolio, on Explore or on the public page, only percentages are shown, never the absolute figures.

3. Generate the X-Ray

03

When every asset is resolved and the total reaches 100% (in percentage mode), press Generate X-Ray. Your builder builds a link with your assets and weights and sends it to renta4banco, which generates the Morningstar Instant X-Ray™ report from that data. We do not create the PDF ourselves: it is generated on the spot through that service.

From there you can:

  • Open the PDF directly.
  • Copy the generated report link to share it as-is.

Which products do not work well in the X-Ray

Instant X-Ray mainly covers UCITS funds, ETFs, ETCs and stocks. It is not designed for pension plans (PP), EPSV/PPSI or hedge funds (FIL). If you add them, we will warn you that they are not recommended and the report will omit them.

If an asset does not appear correctly in the generated PDF

Sometimes a fund is not mapped correctly when the report is generated. If you open the PDF and see a blank gap where a position should be, or a holding from your portfolio is missing, write to us through the contact form with the affected asset ISIN so we can correct it manually as soon as possible.

4. Save and share your portfolio

04

You can save your portfolio with a name, an optional description and a visibility setting, and share a link with anyone you want. Anyone who opens that link will see the same composition in the builder and can generate the X-Ray, adjust it or save it as their own.

There are two types of link:

  • Builder / portfolio link: reloads the same assets and weights so you can keep editing.
  • X-Ray report link: goes directly to the PDF that has already been generated.

To save you need an account with a verified email. If you have not signed in yet, pressing "Save" will ask you to register or sign in, and you can then finish saving without losing what you had already built.

5. Public and private portfolios

05

When you save, you choose the visibility of your portfolio:

FeaturePublicPrivate
Appears in ExploreYesNo
Others can open it, copy the link and mark it as a favouriteYesNo
You can open it in the builderYesYes
Cash amounts are shownNoOnly you, in your builder

By default a new portfolio is created as public, although you can change it later from the builder toggle or when you edit it.

In My portfolios you can see all of yours (public and private), open them in the builder, edit their name, description or visibility, view their X-Ray or delete them.

6. Explore, favourites and comments

06

Explore portfolios shows only other users' public portfolios (plus your own public ones). From there you can:

  • Filter by portfolio name or by user.
  • Sort by most recent or by most favourited.
  • Open the page, view the X-Ray or copy that portfolio's link.
  • Open it in the builder to start from the same composition as your own base.

Favourites: on any public portfolio that is not yours, you can add it to favourites and find it later in My favourites. You need to be registered.

Comments: on a portfolio's public page you can comment, edit or delete your own comments. This also requires an account — if you comment without signing in, you will be asked to register and the text you wrote is not lost.

7. Account and profile

07

Creating an account is optional to generate an X-Ray, but required to save portfolios, add favourites or comment. With an account you can:

  • Save and edit portfolios.
  • Add favourites.
  • Comment on public portfolios.
  • Change your name, username and language from your profile.
  • Sign in with email or with Google.
  • Set or change your password from your profile.
  • Delete your account from your profile (your portfolios stop being visible to others).

Registration requires confirming that you are 18 and accepting the terms and privacy policy. After registering with email, you must verify your email (the verification link expires in 24 hours) before you can save portfolios.

Quick summary

  1. Go to Create your portfolio.
  2. Add your assets with an ISIN or Morningstar ID (ticker or name only if you do not have the code).
  3. Set percentages until you reach 100%, or cash amounts (percentages are calculated automatically; the amount is never shown to others).
  4. Press Generate X-Ray and open the PDF.
  5. If an asset does not appear correctly or is missing from the PDF, write to us with its ISIN so we can correct it.
  6. Save and share the link so someone else can load the same builder.
  7. Choose public visibility (appears in Explore, allows favourites and comments) or private (only you).
